About Usalissa and jen carter, mother and daughter, follow Jen's diabetes blog

This is not just your usual diabetes website as I am the parent of a diabetic child, so all the information is written from my own experiences from supporting her and making her life as normal as possible.

Alissa has had diabetes for over ten years now and we're still working out ways to improve our diet to help our health.

We're finding that with the trend in our nation, and globally, to eat healthy foods, that it's getting easier to find the right ingredients for a healthy diet.

We enjoy the trend towards more organic, locally produced food and are happy to embrace that in our home town of Salisbury.

We're always on the lookout for the latest tasty recipes that are suitable for diabetics - so welcome your submissions!

Eating healthy food is key to being able to control your blood sugar levels. Get creative in adapting your favorite recipes, following our easy tips.

Our recipes are to enable you to enjoy delicious food with family and friends, for family meals, parties and holiday occasions.

Coping with Diabetes

My daughter, Alissa, was diagnosed with diabetes when she was just 11.

Alissa is now 21 and running her own business. You will find articles and recipe ideas, shared and written honestly by both of us based on our own experiences, both good and bad.

Initially Alissa was placed on daily injections, but we soon started reading up about diabetes.

Before long we realised that she would find her life far more flexible if she could have an insulin pump and should also experience better control of her blood glucose levels.

Breakthrough Funding for Diabetic Pumps in UK

At that time, in the UK, it was hard to receive funding for pumps, and we had to involve our MP to be able to obtain the funding required.

Alissa was the first diabetic child in Wiltshire to have an insulin pump funded by the NHS (thanks to Input for their support!)

We've been through the disorienting and worrying time of first diagnosis after missing spotting some of the obvious symptoms of diabetes.

We've had to learn about the treatment and symptoms of Alissa's diabetes and how to best care for her, whilst still allowing her to be independent.

Diabetic Support Groups - You'll never walk alone

It's not always an easy walk, but sometimes just by realising that others have trodden the same path as yourself, it can be help to know that you are not alone. For us, speaking with John from Input and other parents helped us feel supported and "normal" again.

Whilst it may seem that others manage their health far better, the reality is often far from different, and they probably dread that hospital visit just as much as you do.

Healthy Diet & Diabetic Recipes

You'll also find that we've been doing a great deal of experimenting with healthier recipes for diabetics. Alissa loves to do most of the cooking now she's living at home.

We've been creating our own healthy recipes for cakes, cookies, main meals and salads that don't play havoc with your sugar levels. Sometimes we've adapted what we've found in cookbooks, other times we've dreamed them up in our own kitchen.

After finding such difficulty ourselves in finding some healthy and enjoyable foods to eat - we started to put together our own ideas from browsing cooking magazines and sharing recipe and healthy diet tips with friends.

As we discover more tasty recipes that are suitable for including in a healthy diet for children or adults with diabetes type 1, we'll be adding them to the site.

We enjoy scouring through magazines and cookbooks for ideas for baking and cooking meals. Alissa loves organic food, so we try to include that in our low gi diet, when we can!
