Eash French Toast Recipes - A Tasty SnackLiven up this basic french toast recipe (or eggy bread ) with a variety of healthy toppings

Easy to vary, this quick recipe is perfect for snacks and light lunches.

If you have eggs and bread (fresh or stale) in the house - you can fix yourself up this easy meal.

Simply dip slices of bread in beaten egg and fry in either butter or oil in a shallow pan.  When both sides are brown and the egg is cooked, it's ready to eat and enjoy!

You can use just about any type of bread, from homemade, wholemeal or wholewheat, to soft brioche.

Variations on Basic French Toast

The only limit on the variations of this is your own imagination.

Try it with a few simple toppings:-

  • marmite Make the ultimate in quick healthy snacks with french toast topped with fresh blueberries
  • peanut butter
  • honey
  • butter
  • sliced fruit
  • fried tomatoes
  • parma ham or pancetta
  • slices of cheese
  • fresh strawberries, blueberries, redcurrants, raspberries, sliced peaches or nectarines (serve with a light dusting of icing sugar)

This is also the perfect accompaniment to a traditional cooked breakfast of sausage & bacon.

In some parts of Europe, particularly French or Italian cooking, it's traditional to adapt this recipe putting two slices stuffed together with a filling.

Here's a few ideas of what you can fill or stuff with:-

  • mozzarella cheese (which goes wonderfully soft)
  • fresh bananas or strawberries
  • finely chopped dark chocolate
  • cream cheese
  • apple puree or unsweetened apple pie filling
  • ricotta & grated lemon zest
  • bananas and fried bacon, with the tiniest drizzle of maple syrup

The lists is almost endless!
