Healthy Diabetic Snacks for Kids
Children & toddlers can be demanding when it comes to food.
Whether it's a quick pre-breakfast snack or a nighttime nibble, it's good to have an idea of what kinds of foods
you can produce quickly.
Here's our list of suggestions and inexpensive ideas for diabetic friendly snacks which are healthy
and good for kids & toddlers:-
- Peanut butter & whole grain toast - quick 'n' easy. Just make sure you've always got
sliced wholemeal or whole grain bread in the freezer, ready to pop in the toaster at a minutes notice.
- Fresh fruit - keep a supply of fresh fruit in the fruit bowl - bananas and apples are especially
for those with sweet tooth. For a quick snack either eat fruit simply or slice a selection of fruits into
a bowl and top with the thinnest drizzle of honey.
- Fingers of toast - this makes eating fun for the younger child. Add dips of hummus, freshly
boiled eggs (if time permits) or tomato ketchup (low sugar).
- Snack bar - it's helpful to have a supply of these in the same ways as many families with young
children have a box of crisp packets handy! Try & buy low sugar bars, so that there's less
damage to growing teeth - although it's always worth getting your child to clean their teeth after a snack, if
they're willing.
- Quick porridge - keep some rolled oats or oatmeal in the store cupboard. Make with milk or a
mixture of milk and water, top with a little honey, sliced bananas or raisins.
- Frozen bananas - perfect for hot summer days or you may become addicted and want them all year
round. Buy kebab or bbq sticks, chop the banana in half, insert the stick, wrap in seram wrap and pop in
freezer. Keeps up to a week. This tastes like a banana lolly and is healthy - a winning
solution!
- Raisins - you're likely to have either raisins or sultanas or some other dried fruit, such as
apricots, in the store cupboard. Either buy some of the little boxes that you can purchase from stores,
or buy re-usable plastic bags with a seal and make your own quick snack packs.
The reality is that these are just a handful of ideas, but your own food tastes and preferences will give you
dozens of options for easy snacks you can create at home.
