Healthy Eating for a Diabetic Diet

Eating healthily is something that we're all becoming increasingly aware of, whether we have diabetes or not.

There is SO much information on eating healthy food that it's almost difficult to sift through it all to work out just what our diet should consist of.

There seems to be some consensus that it's important to eat a low fat, low GI diet with a balanced level of protein, fruit and vegetables and carbohydrates.

In addition, it's suggested that we add in to our diets the following:-Blueberries - one of the so-called superfoods

  • superfoods, such as goji berries, blueberries, soya beans and brazil nuts
  • dried fruits, such as apricots and cranberries
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • smoothies made from fresh fruits and skimmed milk or yogurt.
  • simple breakfasts of porridge, muesli or compote
  • oily fish containing Omega 3, such as mackerel and sardines

You've probably already got your own favourites of what you enjoy eating, so try gradually incorporating some of these ideas into your daily or weekly menu.

A Journey of Discovery

When Alissa was first diagnosed with diabetes, we had to make some radical changes to our diet, which we did as a whole family.BBC Good Food magazine - great ideas for recipes for a healthy diet

We've found that reading magazines such as BBC's Good Food and Olive magazine, as well as the magazines offered by Waitrose and Sainsbury's have helped us to find good recipes that we can use and give us ideas of the latest information and ideas on what's considered healthy.

With several stores offering recipe cards with "healthy" options, this is a good way to build up cooking and recipes that you can use.

You can also search the recipes on both the Waitrose and Sainsbury's website if you're looking for a healthier version of a favorite recipe, or want to use a particular item, such as blueberries or cranberries.
