Swedish Sild (Herring) Salad Recipe

A traditional salad from Sweden - find the jars of herring in the food shop at Ikea.

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 1 (15 ounce) can pickled sliced beets
  • 1 (6–8 ounces) jar marinated herring filets, drained
  • 1/2 pound boiled, peeled potatoes (about 2 medium potatoes)
  • 1 tart apple, cored and peeled
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium dill pickles, finely chopped

 

  1. Drain the liquid from the pickled sliced beets, reserving the liquid.
  2. Cut into 1/4-inch pieces the beets, herring, apple, and potatoes and
  3. mix them all together in a serving bowl.
  4. Add dill pickle and onion to the bowl along with the reserved beet liquid.
  5. Cover and chill salad overnight to two days.
